CAMPAIGN TO END WORKPLACE VIOLENCECSDC announces second round of Workplace Violence Workshops in Ontarioupdated August 16, 2009 Did you miss out on the first round of workplace violence workshops in the Community Services Division? CSDC will be running a second round of workshops in its “Campaign to end workplace violence” that was launched last year. Like the previous workshops, each community services bargaining unit will be given an opportunity to send a maximum of 2 members to the workshop; however first priority for attendance at the workshops will be given to locals and sectors who did not send participants to the spring 2008 round. We recommend one attendee be a health and safety representative or joint health and safety committee member, and the other an LEC member. Workshop objectives have participants identify contributing factors to workplace violence and share experiences, clarify rights and duties of all parties under health and safety legislation, develop recommendations to prevent workplace violence, and share strategies to raise awareness and build individual and collective energy to challenge workplace violence in social service workplaces. Since the last group of workshops, the government has tabled Bill 168, a proposed amendment to the Occupational Health and Safety Act to recognize workplace violence and harassment. The bill got first reading on April 20, 2009. These proposed changes to health and safety legislation are a long time coming for OPSEU members who for years have been fighting to amend health and safety legislation to recognize workplace violence. With these important amendments pending, it is critical that OPSEU members continue to take action to prevent workplace violence in their workplaces.
