Community social service workers achieve province-wide recognition

As a result of the hard work and dedication of community social service workers across the province,

a recent proclamation by the provincial government has established that March 2010 will forever be known as "Community Social Services Month" in British Columbia.

April 7, 2010 -  "It's official," says Darryl Walker, president of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union.  "The government has formally recognized and affirmed the value and importance of community-based social services.  This is a significant achievement for community social services workers, who continue to work tirelessly to raise awareness about their important sector."

The provincial proclamation comes at the end of another successful Community Social Services Awareness Month campaign, an annual initiative to raise the profile of, and build greater public support for, the thousands of British Columbians who rely on community social services, and the many committed workers who deliver them.  The initiative is carried out jointly by community social services workers from the various unions in the sector.

"This is a great way to cap off our exciting month-long campaign," says James Cavalluzzo, chair of BCGEU's community social services component.  "For weeks, community social services workers have been organizing events, hosting information tables, attending important membership meetings, and speaking to local media.  This proclamation is a product of their efforts and commitment."

The proclamation states that "community social services are vital to the quality of life of all British Columbians."  It affirms that "the availability of these supportive services helps improve the quality of life for everyone, while making our communities stronger and more stable."
