On November 6, community social service workers were recognized for their indispensable work in towns and cities across Canada.

 

Ottawa (16 Nov. 2011) - For the third year in a row, the Government of Manitoba has officially proclaimed November 6, “Community Social Service Workers Appreciation Day”.

“Our members in community social services do an outstanding job in the face of some pretty difficult circumstances. These workers are essential to building strong communities, yet their efforts often go unnoticed. That’s why I think it’s so important to recognize the work they do every year,” says Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU) President Lois Wales.

Again this year Edmonton, Alberta and Canada's border city Lloydminster, AB/SK have both signed a proclamation marking November 6, 2011 as Community Social Service Workers Day of Appreciation.

In addition to marking the day, the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) has kick-started a campaign working toward the 2014 renegotiation of the Canada Social Transfer (CST).

NUPGE has released a new postcard urging Stephen Harper to increase federal spending on social services, ensure accountability on how those funds are spent and to work with the provinces to develop a national human resources strategy for community social services.
