Why an Appreciation Day?

All for One

Dear Friends,

Community Social Service workers are essential to building strong communities and making life better for families and individuals. Yet workers in this sector are often as invisible as the members of the society they support.

The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) has made a commitment to raise the profile of Community Social Service (CSS) workers.

NUPGE is joining with other unions and national advocacy organizations to collectively acknowledge Friday, November 6th, 2009 as the second annual Workers Appreciation Day for the CSS sector.

We urge you to join with others in your workplace and community to:

  • Request that your municipal council adopt a resolution to designate November 6th as Community Social Service Workers Appreciation Day.
  • Organize a community or workplace event to acknowledge workers in this sector.
  • Send a postcard to the Prime Minister calling for renewed funding for social services.
  • Distribute materials in your workplace and community to inform people about the day-to-day presence and importance of community social service workers to us all.

We have created a variety of campaign tools that will help you successfully organize for this day. We hope that this interactive website will allow you to network and enhance communications between workers across Canada.

We look forward to working with you around this Day of Appreciation to garner more respect and build recognition for CSS workers in the years ahead.

Sincerely,

James Clancy

National Union President
